Project: 2012 Energy Conservation, Efficiency, and Demand Response: The Sixth Biennial Residential Benchmarking Survey

Abt SRBI

In 2012, Research Into Action collaborated with Abt SRBI on the Energy Conservation, Efficiency, and Demand Response: The Sixth Biennial Residential Benchmarking Survey. Like the five previous national studies this team has conducted since 2002, this study was designed to assist project sponsors in going beyond public opinion about recent events to understand residential customer perceptions and behaviors. Specifically, our team sought to learn about: 1) successes that had been achieved in the marketplace, 2) remaining near-term opportunities, and 3) how utilities, government agencies, and regional organizations position themselves to take advantage of these opportunities. The national study reported on results of our team's telephone interviews with 800 randomly selected U.S. consumers and 100 randomly selected subjects in territories chosen by each project sponsor; the results of these over-samples were proprietary to each sponsor. The project emphasized the development of actionable results for project sponsors, and importantly, built upon our 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2010 surveys to provide an unparalleled understanding of changes in consumer attitudes and behavior. In addition to helping develop the research instrument and analyze data, we contributed our recent research on the awareness, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors with residential customers in California, while maintaining continuity with past survey waves for trending information.
