Project: Behavior Intervention Strategies - Phase II

New York State Energy Research and Development Authority

In 2013, NYSERDA contracted with Research Into Action to conduct Phase II of our work to assist NYSERDA in integrating behavior change strategies into its energy efficiency and clean energy programs. Our Phase 1 Final Behavioral Report identified a process for determining which interventions offer the most promise for integration into NYSERDA's current programs and what steps should be taken to facilitate that integration. We identified three steps: 1) developing a list of the types of energy efficiency behaviors promoted by each NYSERDA program, 2) connecting that list of behaviors with the intervention strategies in the Phase I Final Behavioral Report to identify which interventions in the taxonomy would be effective in promoting program-specific behaviors, and 3) assessing the types of adjustments needed for integrating promising behavior change strategies into existing programs. During this project, we will conduct workshops for NYSERDA’s program staff to aid them in understanding the behavior intervention strategies that might be most appropriate for their needs. Following the workshops, we will work with staff from three of the programs to identify energy efficiency behaviors their program sought to affect, link intervention strategies and behaviors, and identify best opportunities and next steps to integrate the appropriate behavior change intervention strategies into their program.
