In 2001, we led the fifth biennial Appliance Sale Tracking: 2001 Residential Survey for the Energy Center of Wisconsin. The study included a test of WEB TV with 430 respondents and a telephone RDD sample of 3,000 Wisconsin residents. We sought to answer two primary questions: 1) What new appliances and lighting products were Wisconsin residents buying—and how efficient were they? 2) How do appliance purchases compare over time? Using the Energy Center of Wisconsin's ongoing system to track appliance sales, we surveyed 3,000 people about recent purchases of refrigerators, water heaters, forced-air furnaces, central air conditioners, and clothes washers. We also asked them about purchases of compact fluorescent light bulbs and torchiere lamps, and their awareness of the ENERGY STAR brand and its influence on energy-efficient appliance purchases. We then compared, as appropriate, the results of this study to those of the earlier studies, and identified changes in appliance purchasing patterns in Wisconsin.
