Project: Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Research/City of Seattle Energy Performance Score Project

Earth Advantage Institute for the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and US Department of Energy

Since 2010, Research Into Action has collaborated with the Earth Advantage Institute (EAI) and Portland State University's Department of Urban Studies and Planning on an analysis of residential consumer choice and behavior related to the implementation of home energy audit recommendations. The project is part of a U.S. Department of Energy-funded Seattle Energy Performance Score Project led by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). The team chose Seattle City Light (SCL) as an example utility. We are conducting several phases of telephone surveys with a sample of pre-audit and mid-retrofit/post-retrofit homeowners to determine why they chose to participate in the home energy audit SCL offers and how the information influences their decision to make their homes more energy-efficient. Research Into Action helps develop the interview instruments and sampling plan; participates in planning and other data collection activities; conducts in-depth phone interviews of auditors, audit recipients, and stakeholders, such as real estate professionals; collaborates with PSU on an ongoing assessment of survey responses; and synthesizes findings for delivery to LBNL and DOE.
