Project: Fortis BC and BC Hydro New Homes Participants

BC Hydro/Dunsky Energy Consulting

In 2011, Research Into Action was a subcontractor to Dunsky Energy to conduct a survey of residential customers of Fortis BC and BC Hydro. The utilities sought information about factors homebuyers consider when buying a new energy-efficient home. The primary goal was to determine how buyers factor the expected energy savings of the efficient home into their purchasing decision and to use this information to estimate the value of the non-energy benefits of the new energy-efficient home. We developed a survey that assessed the role that various energy-related and non-energy-related factors played in the purchase decision, the perceived incremental value of the efficient home, the relative contribution of energy-related and non-energy benefits to that incremental value, general expectations regarding the payback of energy-efficient investments, attitudes and expectations concerning energy costs, and demographic information. The survey was administered by mail and online. A key finding of the survey was that two separate methods of estimating the value of non-energy benefits both provided results that were within the range of most estimates identified in the literature.
