"In 2011, Research Into Action provided research design consulting services to the Customer Performance Group (CPG). The purpose of the research was to assess the effects of various utility interventions on consumer confidence, rate choice, equipment choice, and energy-using behaviors among consumers who received smart meters at residences served by Duquesne Light (Pennsylvania). In particular, we provided feedback on the validity of sample plans incorporating demographic analyses and provided advice on how to allocate the complex sample into four treatment groups to achieve the best possible statistical power based on various assumptions about effect sizes. We also addressed data analysis concerns.
