Project: Technology Adoption

Pacific Gas & Electric

In 2008, Pacific Gas & Electric hired Research Into Action to explore behavior change factors leading to the adoption of new technologies: thermal absorber tanks, and thermal and mechanical vapor recompression systems. We studied typical technology adoption rates for businesses, the conditions underlying technology adoption rates, and barriers to technology adoption and ways to mitigate them and accelerate adoption. In conducting this research, we reviewed the energy and social science literature and conducted interviews with leading researchers studying technology adoption. This research helped PG&E improve its program design and better substantiate the energy savings claims it made as a result of its customers' adoption of emerging technologies.
