In 2008, Southern California Edison (Edison) contracted with Research Into Action to conduct process evaluations of the three EARTH Schools energy-efficiency programs it offers students from kindergarten through college: LivingWise, Green Schools, and Green Campus. The evaluations explored the potential to add performance measures, assessed the reasons for high- and low-performing schools and community and family response to the programs, and examined the roles of project leads to identify opportunities to improve their success rate. Research included a review of program documents and in-depth interviews with program staff. Working with a science curriculum specialist, we also reviewed curriculum materials, performed onsite observations, and interviewed school staff in order to assess the quality of the curricula and their consistency with state standards. The process evaluation improved Edison’s program managers' awareness of the programs' progress, and their ability to assist their implementation contractors.
