In 2010, Energy Trust of Oregon asked Research Into Action to re-analyze results of our 2009 Residential Energy Awareness and Perception Study. In particular, we sought to verify self-reported participation in Energy Trust programs. To do so, we compared the respondents’ self-reported information and records of the actual participation Energy Trust had attributed to their address. Our analysis revealed three compelling statistics: a) Only 25% of actual participants accurately reported that they had participated, regardless of how recently they had participated. b) Participants were more likely to recognize some measures (e.g., insulation) than others (e.g., duct insulation and an energy review). c) The actual participation rate was twice as high as the reported participation rate. We also analyzed the accuracy of respondents' reports based on market segment, housing type, home ownership, household income, and their energy utility. Our research revealed that participation studies should include means to reduce self-reporting errors.
